Hey guys!
I hope you're doing well. Today, I have a different kind of post for you. We're talking my skincare.
If you’ve ever had clear skin for years and then suddenly found yourself dealing with painful, stubborn breakouts, you know how disorienting it can feel. That was me recently.
I had just flown in from Geneva to Kenya, and shortly after arriving, went to Eldoret and as fate would have it, to Isiolo, a county I never thought I'd ever find myself in. My skin completely turned on me. What started as a few bumps quickly became large, painful lumps under the skin. They lasted nearly three weeks and disappeared only to leave behind dark spots — something I hadn’t experienced in over 10 years.
Here’s the thing though: instead of panicking, I went back to what I knew works. This post is about exactly how to heal acne, how to heal a breakout fast, and the acne remedies that helped me repair my skin barrier and regain control. Remember, I am not a dermatologist but I was 100% certain about this because I have tried it before, a good routine with these products. I'm not using them all everyday now, thank God, but they worked when I needed them to.
What caused the breakout?
Before getting into how to heal acne, it’s important to understand what likely triggered it. A combination of factors played a role:
- Climate change from cold Geneva to hot, dry Isiolo
- Travel stress and dehydration
- Possible changes in water and environment
- Increased oil production due to heat
For someone with very oily skin like mine, this combination can easily disrupt the skin barrier and lead to deep, inflamed acne.
My approach: heal first, treat second
One mistake many people make when dealing with breakouts is attacking the acne too aggressively. Over-exfoliating, using harsh treatments, and layering too many actives can make things worse.
Instead, my focus was simple:
- Repair my skin barrier
- Keep my routine gentle and consistent
- Reduce inflammation
- Support my skin rather than fight it
Here’s exactly what I used and how each product contributed to healing my breakout.
1. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
This was the backbone of my routine. When your skin barrier is damaged, hydration is everything.
This cream helped to:
- Restore moisture with ceramides
- Strengthen my skin barrier
- Reduce tightness and irritation
Even with oily skin, skipping moisturizer is a mistake. Proper hydration actually helps regulate oil production.
2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Sunscreen
Sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially when healing acne and dealing with dark spots.
It helped to:
- Prevent hyperpigmentation from getting worse
- Protect my sensitive, healing skin from UV damage
- Maintain overall skin health
If you’re learning how to heal a breakout, sunscreen is just as important as treatment products. The serum you see next to it was a freebie from the pharmacy as part of their promotion. I haven't tried it yet but I trust La Roche Posay products and so I can't wait to introduce it because hey, it was given to me for free for being a customer.
3. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
This was my only active treatment during the breakout.
It helped to:
- Regulate oil production
- Reduce inflammation
- Improve the appearance of pores
- Support healing without irritation
Niacinamide is one of the best ingredients when figuring out how to heal acne gently but effectively.
4. Rose Water and Glycerine Mixture
This simple combination worked like magic for soothing my skin. It helped to:
- Calm inflammation
- Provide lightweight hydration
- Give my skin a soft, balanced feel
Glycerine is a humectant, which means it draws moisture into the skin — essential for barrier repair.
5. Garnier Micellar Water for Sensitive Skin
Cleansing needed to be as gentle as possible.
This helped to:
- Remove dirt and oil without stripping my skin
- Avoid irritation from harsh cleansers
- Keep my routine simple and effective
When it comes to skincare for oily skin, harsh stripping cleansers often backfire and increase oil production. Oh, you'll notice I also prefer baby wipes to clear dirt or any foundation off my face before I go in with anything else for cleansing.
6. Uriage Cleansing Bar and La Roche-Posay Lipikar Surgras Cleansing Bar
I alternated between these two depending on where I was because I did end up going back to Nairobi and Eldoret and I always have at least one surgras bar in any place I go to.
They helped to:
- Cleanse without disrupting my skin barrier
- Maintain moisture while removing impurities
- Keep my skin calm and balanced
Choosing the right cleanser is key when dealing with acne remedies that don’t damage your skin further. I like using the bars but a liquid Cerave hydrating cleanser can do as well.
7. Pernex AC Benzoyl Peroxide
This is where I was a bit more targeted. Instead of applying it all over my face, I used it only on the painful, active breakouts.
It helped to:
- Kill acne-causing bacteria
- Reduce the size and intensity of the lumps
- Speed up the healing of inflamed spots
Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne remedies, but it can be drying. That’s why I used it sparingly and made sure the rest of my routine focused on hydration and barrier repair.
What I didn’t do (and why it mattered)
Just as important as what I used is what I avoided:
- No harsh exfoliants
- No over-washing
- No picking or squeezing
- No switching products constantly
Consistency is one of the most underrated factors in how to heal a breakout.
That said, below is the scrub I usually use once in a while which I reintroduced much later, about 6 weeks after the breakout went away. I love this Garnier 3-in-1 product because it leaves my skin feeling soft, clean and smooth.
Results: what happened after 3 weeks
The painful lumps gradually went down without becoming worse or spreading aggressively. Once they healed, they left dark spots, but the inflammation was gone. My skin felt stronger, less reactive, and more balanced in oil production.
Now I’m focusing on fading the hyperpigmentation, but the hardest part — the active acne — is over.
Final thoughts: how to heal acne the right way:
If you’re struggling with sudden breakouts, especially with oily skin, remember this:
Healing your skin is not about doing more — it’s about doing the right things consistently.
Focus on:
- Barrier repair first
- Gentle, hydrating skincare
- Ingredients like niacinamide
- Daily sunscreen
- Patience and consistency
Sometimes the best acne remedies are the simplest ones. I’ll be sharing the deeper backstory behind how I learned this approach in my next post — because this wasn’t my first time dealing with acne, just the first time in a very long time. I'm all better now, Thank God, but those breakouts better keep off my face.
I will also be sharing more skin related posts as I realized I focus so much on fashion and travel but skin is important too. I will also give you an update of the dark spots and other products I use. I promise they're not many but they work.
Xo,
Sophie
