I hope you loved my previous post on Amsterdam, because I am here with another one. Call it a part 2 of 4 parts because I did spend quite some time there and loved it enough to get lots of footage of the city.There are some cities that you visit and immediately understand the hype. Amsterdam was one of those cities for me.
I visited Amsterdam when the weather was warm, the skies were beautifully blue, and the city seemed to be putting on its best outfit. The canals were sparkling in the sunshine, flowers were everywhere, bicycles were decorated with colorful blooms, and every bridge seemed to be begging to be photographed.
Also, naturally, I had dressed for the occasion.
I wore a beautiful white eyelet skater dress with sneakers, a burgundy belt, burgundy bag and burgundy earrings, paired with my black pixie haircut. Comfortable enough to explore but still very much giving "I planned this outfit around the city." Because if you're going to Amsterdam, you might as well look the part.
However, beyond the outfits and photographs, there are so many reasons why Amsterdam left such a strong impression on me.
Why You Should Visit Amsterdam
One of the biggest reasons why you should visit Amsterdam is how effortlessly beautiful it is.
Amsterdam doesn't need enormous monuments on every corner to impress you. Its beauty is often in the details: narrow houses lined up along canals, tiny bridges covered in flowers, bicycles leaning casually against railings and boats gliding through the water. It feels like a city that was designed for wandering, and that's exactly what I loved about it. I could walk without having a strict plan, turn onto another street and suddenly find myself standing beside another gorgeous canal or picturesque bridge.
The Canals Are Everything
You can't talk about the best things about Amsterdam without talking about the canals. They are essentially the city's personality.
Walking beside them was one of my favorite parts of my trip. The water, historic buildings, bridges and bicycles created the kind of scenery that makes you want to stop every few minutes for another photograph, and yes, I did.
My camera roll can confirm that Amsterdam has absolutely no shortage of photogenic corners.
There was something particularly beautiful about seeing the canals in warm, sunny weather. Everything looked brighter, from the flowers to the architecture, and the reflections on the water made the city feel almost cinematic.
Amsterdam Is a Dream for Photographers. If you love travel photography, Amsterdam is going to keep you busy. The bridges alone provide countless opportunities for photographs, especially when they're decorated with flowers and framed by the city's famous canals.
Then there are the bicycles.
Amsterdam's cycling culture is iconic, but I wasn't expecting just how visually appealing the bicycles would be. Some were simple and practical, while others were decorated with flowers, adding another layer of color to the streets. For someone who loves fashion and travel photography, it was basically a dream.
My white eyelet dress also happened to be perfect for the setting. The delicate texture of the dress worked beautifully against Amsterdam's historic architecture, while the burgundy accessories gave the look a little contrast.
The sneakers were perhaps the most important part, though. Amsterdam is a city for walking, and looking cute is considerably more enjoyable when your feet aren't plotting against you.
The City Is Made for Walking
Another one of the best things about Amsterdam is that exploring can feel like an adventure in itself. You don't necessarily need to spend the entire day rushing between attractions.
Sometimes the best thing to do in Amsterdam is simply walk. Take a bridge. Follow a canal. Wander down a street you've never seen before. Stop for coffee. Take another photograph. Watch cyclists pass by. There is something incredibly relaxing about exploring a city this way.
Of course, Amsterdam has plenty of famous attractions and museums, but I also loved the moments in between the major sights.
Things to Do in Amsterdam
There are plenty of things to do in Amsterdam, whether you're visiting for the first time or returning for another trip.
You can explore the city's famous canals, visit its museums, admire the architecture, take a canal cruise or simply spend the day discovering different neighborhoods, and if you're visiting when the weather is warm, take advantage of it. Find a pretty outdoor café, sit beside a canal and watch the city go by.
Amsterdam in warm weather has a completely different energy. People are outside, terraces are lively, flowers are blooming and everyone seems to be in a better mood. It's difficult not to feel happy when you're surrounded by that much sunshine and color.
Amsterdam and Fashion
I also loved how easy it was to dress for Amsterdam. The city has a naturally relaxed fashion aesthetic, which meant I could combine something feminine like my white eyelet dress with practical sneakers without feeling overdressed.
The burgundy belt, handbag and earrings added a pop of color while keeping the outfit coordinated, and the black pixie? It did exactly what it needed to do. There is something particularly satisfying about travelling in an outfit that photographs beautifully but is also practical enough to spend hours exploring in. Amsterdam definitely gave me plenty of opportunities to test that theory.
There Is Beauty Everywhere.
Perhaps what stayed with me most was how consistently beautiful Amsterdam felt. It wasn't just one landmark. It wasn't one famous square or one particular attraction. It was the combination of everything.
- The canals.
- The bridges.
- The flowers.
- The bicycles.
- The architecture.
- The sunshine.
- The little streets that seemed to lead somewhere interesting every time I turned a corner.
That is what makes Amsterdam such a memorable destination.
So, why should you visit Amsterdam?
Because it's beautiful without feeling intimidating. It's historic without feeling stuck in the past. It's lively without constantly feeling overwhelming, and perhaps most importantly, it's a city that rewards curiosity.
Some of my favorite memories from Amsterdam came from simply walking around and allowing the city to surprise me. I loved photographing the canals, crossing its many bridges, spotting flower-covered bicycles and, of course, finding beautiful locations for my travel photographs.
Looking back at those sunny photographs, I can still remember how good it felt to be there.
Amsterdam gave me beautiful scenery, beautiful weather, beautiful memories and, naturally, a very good reason to wear a white dress with burgundy accessories.
And honestly, what more could a traveler ask for?
If you're wondering what to do in Amsterdam, start by exploring the city slowly. Walk beside the canals, cross the bridges, stop for photographs and let yourself get a little lost.
You might just discover that getting lost is one of the best things about Amsterdam.
