Why You Should Visit Zandaam In The Netherlands

If you are looking for a destination that feels completely different from the busy streets of Amsterdam, Zaandam is worth adding to your itinerary. Just a short trip from Amsterdam, this charming Dutch city combines colorful architecture, traditional windmills, canals, shopping and plenty of picture-perfect spots.

I visited Zaandam during my time in the Netherlands, and what immediately stood out to me was how different the atmosphere felt from central Amsterdam. It was quieter, colorful and incredibly photogenic, making it one of those places where you can simply walk around and enjoy the surroundings without feeling like you have to rush from one attraction to another.

So, if you are wondering why you should visit Zaandam, here are some very good reasons.

1. Zaandam Has Some of the Most Colorful Architecture

One of the first things you notice in Zaandam is the architecture. The city is known for its distinctive green wooden houses and colorful buildings, which give it a wonderfully playful character.

The most famous example is the striking collection of stacked green façades at the Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam. It looks almost like someone took a collection of traditional Dutch houses and stacked them on top of each other.

It is definitely one of those places where your camera comes out before you even realize it.

If you enjoy architecture and photography, exploring Zaandam on foot gives you plenty of opportunities to capture something different from the classic Amsterdam canal-house aesthetic.

2. It Is Close to Amsterdam

One of the biggest reasons to visit Zaandam is how easy it is to include in an Amsterdam itinerary.

You do not need to plan an entire holiday around Zaandam. It works beautifully as a day trip from Amsterdam, especially if you want to see another side of the Netherlands without travelling far.

The short journey means you can spend a few hours exploring Zaandam and still have plenty of time to return to Amsterdam.

For travellers who like getting out of the main tourist areas, this is a particularly convenient option.

3. There Are Plenty of Things to Do in Zaandam

Although Zaandam is smaller and more relaxed than Amsterdam, there are still plenty of things to do in Zaandam.

You can explore the city centre, admire the colorful architecture, walk along the waterfront, shop, stop for coffee or simply wander around and take photographs.

One of my favorite things about travelling is discovering places without having every minute planned. Zaandam is perfect for that kind of travel. You can walk, look around, take pictures and enjoy the atmosphere without feeling pressured to tick off a huge list of attractions.

Sometimes, that is exactly what you want from a day trip.

4. You Can Experience Dutch History and Tradition

Zaandam is closely connected to the history of the Zaan region, particularly its traditional wooden architecture, windmills and industrial heritage.

If you want to experience traditional Dutch culture beyond Amsterdam's canals, Zaandam gives you an opportunity to do that.

The nearby Zaanse Schans is particularly famous for its historic windmills, wooden houses and traditional crafts. It is technically outside Zaandam's city centre, but it is an easy addition to a trip to the area.

Seeing the traditional windmills alongside the more modern city makes the region especially interesting.

5. Zaandam Is Perfect for Photography

If you are anything like me, a beautiful destination is automatically more appealing when there are plenty of places to take photographs.

Zaandam definitely delivers.

The colourful buildings, Dutch architecture, waterways and traditional details make the city incredibly photogenic. You can find interesting backgrounds without necessarily needing to search for a famous landmark.

I also love destinations where you can turn an ordinary walk into a mini photoshoot. Zaandam has that kind of energy.

Whether you are travelling with a proper camera or simply using your phone, there are plenty of opportunities to capture colourful travel photos.

And, of course, if you have planned a cute travel outfit, Zaandam is not exactly going to complain about being your backdrop.

A Relaxed Alternative to Amsterdam

Another reason why you should visit Zaandam is the change of pace.

Amsterdam is beautiful, but it can also be busy, especially around its most famous attractions. Zaandam offers a more relaxed experience while still giving you plenty to see.

You can spend time walking through the centre, browsing shops, taking photographs and enjoying the architecture without constantly navigating large crowds.

For me, that is part of the appeal of adding smaller cities and towns to a European itinerary. They give you a chance to see a destination at a different pace.

Is Zaandam Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, especially if you are already visiting Amsterdam and have some extra time.

Zaandam may not have the enormous list of attractions that Amsterdam does, but that is precisely what makes it appealing. It is colourful, easy to explore and different enough to make your trip feel like you have discovered somewhere new.

From its distinctive architecture and Dutch heritage to its photography opportunities and convenient location, there are plenty of reasons to visit Zaandam.

So, if you are planning a trip to the Netherlands, do not limit yourself to Amsterdam. Take the short journey to Zaandam, walk around without rushing, admire the colourful buildings and let yourself enjoy the city at its own pace.

Sometimes the smaller stops end up becoming some of the most memorable parts of a trip.
